Why should we care about George Floyd?

After much rumination, I decided to make a short video presenting a libertarian centrist view on the murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and the trial of former Police Officer Derek Chauvin. Should we care about this situation? Does it affect us? What are the wider ramifications if we allow Police Officers, and other agents of the state, to violate the human rights of citizens?

TRANSCRIPT

1
00:00:06,640 –> 00:00:11,448
This is not going to be a fun video for me.
And I almost didn’t bother making it.

2
00:00:11,448 –> 00:00:14,248
In fact, I might not even release it.

3
00:00:14,248 –> 00:00:18,755
Anyway, I’m going to talk about the George Floyd trial.

4
00:00:18,755 –> 00:00:21,868
It’s just started, and I haven’t really been watching it.

5
00:00:21,868 –> 00:00:27,967
But I know it’s happening because lots of my
friends on social media have been talking about it.

6
00:00:27,967 –> 00:00:33,500
Now I have a lot of left-wing friends.
And I have lots of right-wing friends too.

7
00:00:33,500 –> 00:00:39,422
Personally, I’m a centrist libertarian, and
very proud to be a centrist libertarian,

8
00:00:39,422 –> 00:00:45,813
because we, the libertarians, are generally very principled people.

9
00:00:45,813 –> 00:00:50,841
And it’s sad for me to see the reactions to the George Floyd trial

10
00:00:50,841 –> 00:00:56,744
because of some very unprincipled rhetoric from my friends.

11
00:00:56,744 –> 00:00:59,508
In particular, my right-wing friends.

12
00:00:59,760 –> 00:01:03,701
You see, a lot of my right-wing friends
have been sharing video of George Floyd

13
00:01:03,701 –> 00:01:08,207
from before he was killed – just before
he was killed. And looking at that video

14
00:01:08,207 –> 00:01:11,833
it’s very obvious the guy was not right in the head.

15
00:01:11,833 –> 00:01:14,355
he seems to have been high as a kite.

16
00:01:14,355 –> 00:01:18,963
And he may well have been aggressive.
And he may well have been threatening.

17
00:01:18,963 –> 00:01:23,415
But even if we accept ALL of that is true

18
00:01:23,760 –> 00:01:29,004
it doesn’t change the fact that he
was murdered by an agent of the state.

19
00:01:29,336 –> 00:01:33,917
He was killed by a Police Officer while in custody.

20
00:01:33,917 –> 00:01:39,575
He wasn’t a threat to anybody at
that point but he was killed anyway.

21
00:01:39,840 –> 00:01:44,601
There is no justification for that. None whatsoever!

22
00:01:44,601 –> 00:01:48,302
Maybe he was high. Maybe he was a criminal.

23
00:01:48,408 –> 00:01:51,169
But criminals have human rights too.

24
00:01:51,169 –> 00:01:54,389
And I get that being a Police
Officer is a very difficult job.

25
00:01:54,480 –> 00:01:57,736
And you want to support the
Police. Of course, you do.

26
00:01:57,736 –> 00:02:01,741
But human rights apply to EVERYONE.

27
00:02:01,741 –> 00:02:06,303
Even to people you don’t like.
Even to criminals.

28
00:02:06,303 –> 00:02:10,305
So why are you trying to defend Derek Chauvin?

29
00:02:10,305 –> 00:02:15,757
And why do you think George Floyd
being high is a legitimate defense?

30
00:02:16,480 –> 00:02:19,995
And these are questions specifically for my right-wing friends,

31
00:02:19,995 –> 00:02:27,045
because they are the only ones sharing those
videos of George Floyd acting like a maniac.

32
00:02:27,045 –> 00:02:29,842
By trying to defend Derek Chauvin,

33
00:02:29,842 –> 00:02:35,926
it seems like you’re suggesting that the police
should be allowed to murder certain people.

34
00:02:36,101 –> 00:02:38,686
Or maybe certain groups of people?

35
00:02:38,686 –> 00:02:44,102
And you’ve got to realize that’s
a very dangerous slippery slope.

36
00:02:44,102 –> 00:02:49,088
And you need to ask yourself why
you’re going down that slippery slope.

37
00:02:49,088 –> 00:02:50,535
Think about it…

38
00:02:51,280 –> 00:02:54,985
So the police murder a civilian that you don’t like.

39
00:02:54,985 –> 00:03:00,071
I don’t know why you don’t like him.
Maybe you just hate junkies. Whatever.

40
00:03:00,071 –> 00:03:02,796
And you decide to just accept it.

41
00:03:03,200 –> 00:03:06,939
That’s a naive and very short-sighted attitude.

42
00:03:06,939 –> 00:03:10,666
Because, if you let this one slide,

43
00:03:10,666 –> 00:03:15,482
eventually the police will start killing people you do like.

44
00:03:15,482 –> 00:03:17,112
Try and think it through.

45
00:03:17,112 –> 00:03:22,347
The police murder some random, alleged
junkie and you choose to defend them.

46
00:03:22,347 –> 00:03:27,503
But tomorrow, when they kill a member of
your family, you’re going to be outraged.

47
00:03:27,503 –> 00:03:29,999
Why? What’s the difference?

48
00:03:29,999 –> 00:03:33,994
Why are the human rights of you
and your family more important

49
00:03:33,994 –> 00:03:36,677
than the human rights of that random junkie?

50
00:03:36,677 –> 00:03:39,449
That random junkie has a family too.

51
00:03:39,449 –> 00:03:43,121
Do you think the human rights of you
and your family are more important

52
00:03:43,121 –> 00:03:46,041
than those of George Floyd?

53
00:03:46,041 –> 00:03:51,448
And is that because you think of
him as being less human than you?

54
00:03:51,694 –> 00:03:53,276
Well guess what?

55
00:03:53,680 –> 00:04:01,142
There are people above you in the social hierarchy
who think exactly the same thing about you!

56
00:04:01,142 –> 00:04:07,961
If you, or one of your loved ones, got murdered
those people will be trying to justify it as well.

57
00:04:08,320 –> 00:04:11,759
And then YOU will be the George Floyd!

58
00:04:11,759 –> 00:04:17,348
You’re only defending Derek Chauvin because
you think it could never happen to you.

59
00:04:17,348 –> 00:04:21,713
That you will never end up a victim of police brutality.

60
00:04:21,713 –> 00:04:23,594
And you absolutely could.

61
00:04:23,594 –> 00:04:27,664
And THAT is why you should always defend human rights.

62
00:04:27,664 –> 00:04:30,448
Why you should defend EVERYBODY’S human rights.

63
00:04:30,448 –> 00:04:35,734
And why we should all care about what happened to George Floyd.

64
00:04:35,734 –> 00:04:41,476
Because tyranny isn’t carried
out by politicians themselves.

65
00:04:42,000 –> 00:04:45,600
Tyranny is carried out by agents of the state.

66
00:04:45,600 –> 00:04:47,848
It is carried out by Police Officers,

67
00:04:47,848 –> 00:04:51,735
and state officials and soldiers

  • just like in Burma today.

68
00:04:52,000 –> 00:04:56,535
It isn’t the aristocrats and the oligarchs who terrorize you.

69
00:04:56,800 –> 00:05:01,727
They get other ordinary people to do it for them.

70
00:05:01,958 –> 00:05:04,713
So when you see that happening

71
00:05:05,164 –> 00:05:07,380
you should never celebrate it.

72
00:05:07,380 –> 00:05:11,095
Never defend it. Never try to justify it.

73
00:05:11,095 –> 00:05:16,645
Because, if you do, eventually they will come for you too.

74
00:05:17,310 –> 00:05:23,229
A government that is allowed to
oppress some of the people today

75
00:05:23,229 –> 00:05:27,251
will oppress ALL of the people tomorrow.
